In November 2024, Rio de Janeiro, known as a cultural and tourist gem, will host the 19th G20 Summit. This international gathering brings together the world’s largest economies, including the USA, China, the EU, and Norway as a guest country, to discuss global challenges such as economic growth, climate, and social justice. For Norway, participating in the G20 is a unique chance to promote green technology and sustainable solutions.

Why is the G20 Summit Important?

The G20 was established in 1999 and consists of 19 nations plus the EU. These countries represent 80% of the world’s GDP, 75% of global trade, and 60% of the world’s population. Each year, G20 members gather to discuss the global economy, political issues, and shared challenges. With Brazil leading the G20 in 2024, a new focus on social justice and climate-friendly initiatives is introduced, opening the door to essential discussions on sustainability – an area where Norway has much to offer.

Rio de Janeiro: An Experienced Host City

Rio de Janeiro has a strong history of hosting global events, such as the UN conferences Eco-92 and Rio+20, as well as the 2014 FIFA World Cup and the 2016 Summer Olympics. These events have provided Rio with both logistical and organizational experience and strengthened the city’s profile on the international stage. The G20 Summit in Rio demonstrates Brazil’s ambition to be a leading actor in sustainability and social justice. With the G20 as a key arena to elevate such themes, Rio will also have the opportunity to showcase its own initiatives and solutions to global challenges.

Norway as a Guest Country in G20 2024

For Norway, the summit provides a platform to share its expertise in climate and sustainable energy. Led by the Prime Minister, the Norwegian delegation will focus on economic justice and the climate crisis. Norway is renowned for its leadership in carbon capture and storage (CCS) and can inspire other G20 countries seeking to reduce their carbon emissions. This technology is particularly important in a world striving to achieve ambitious climate goals, and Norway’s role in the G20 2024 gives the country a golden opportunity to present concrete solutions.

G20 Social – A New Arena for Civil Society

An innovation at this year’s summit is G20 Social, held from November 14-16, 2024. This initiative, launched by Brazil’s President Lula da Silva, provides civil society with a unique opportunity to participate in discussions on vital social issues, such as youth engagement, urban development, and social inclusion. Norway also has the chance to participate, with Norwegian organizations able to share their insights and learn from global actors. G20 Social thus gives Norway a valuable chance to forge new connections and strengthen international relations.

Economic Benefits for Rio de Janeiro and Brazil

The G20 Summit will provide a substantial economic boost to Rio de Janeiro. The Visit Rio Foundation estimates the event will generate around R$432.5 million. Hotels will be full, restaurants will experience increased traffic, and many jobs will be created. By positioning itself as an attractive venue for major global events, Rio can also attract long-term investments and tourism.

Logistics and Security During G20 in Rio

To ensure the smooth execution of the summit, Rio has declared a “mega-holiday” from November 15-20. This will reduce traffic and ease delegate movement within the city. Additionally, local, national, and international security forces are working closely to protect participants. Brazil is also investing in new technology and security personnel training to meet the strict security requirements that come with the G20.

Long-Term Opportunities for Norway Through the G20

By actively participating in the G20 and G20 Social, Norway can strengthen its international connections and collaboration opportunities in sustainability, technology, and energy. Norway’s participation can also open doors for Norwegian companies looking to export green technology and sustainable development solutions. New partnerships with other G20 countries can also give Norway a more significant role in international climate policies.

How the G20 Summit Contributes to the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals

The G20 Summit in Rio is a golden opportunity for Brazil, Norway, and the rest of the world to promote the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals. Climate, social inclusion, and economic equality will be central themes, and the summit provides Norway and other countries a platform to share concrete actions that can inspire other nations. This is essential for building a sustainable and inclusive economy for the future.
